Job Overview:  
Our client is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical 
specialists offering a broad range of professional services.  Through our work, we make a 
positive difference in the world. 
 
The Midlands’ geotechnical team is comprised of 25+ enthusiastic professional staff working on 
a wide variety of high-profile and challenging projects, both at home and abroad.  This is a new 
role created to strengthen our capability in large multidisciplinary projects, and is required to 
help run and develop the day to day operations of the group. 
 
Role:  
Working very closely with both the team and the group leader, you will be responsible for 
executing and assisting with managing projects across all infrastructure sectors, from oil and 
gas to rail, highways and airports.  Your technical knowledge and skill will result in the team’s 
success on projects both domestic and overseas for high profile clients.  
 
Recent project examples include: Nouvelle Autoroute 30 (Montréal); Proving Ground for GT Tyres (Jakarta); 
High Speed 2; Network Rail Earthworks Asset Management; and A14 Cambridge-Huntingdon 
Improvements (the Highways Agency’s largest current project).  You will be encouraged to 
further enhance your technical knowledge, and develop a specialism if desired, within our 
supportive and experienced team.  You should be either be Chartered Civil Engineer (MICE) or 
working towards becoming MICE within the next year or two. 
 
Your responsibilities and workload will be varied, typically including: geotechnical analysis and 
design; site supervision of ground investigations or construction; production of drawings, 
specifications and reports; and some supervision of more junior members of the team.  Whilst 
technical and management skills are essential to your success, it is essential that you are 
capable of interfacing with other disciplines in order to form cohesive multidisciplinary teams 
and working groups.  You will be an excellent communicator and an enthusiastic and pro-active 
team worker. 
 
As you will be guiding small project teams as well as less experienced geotechnical staff, it is 
essential that you are a calm and focused individual that understands how to influence, 
motivate and nurture others in order to drive and deliver excellence.  Exhibiting exceptional 
analytical and problem-solving skills whilst retaining a solution-orientated approach, you will 
favour working in a collaborative and inclusive manner with colleagues from different 
specialisms and teams. 
 
Requirements  and skills  Essential Skills and Knowledge 
•  Chartered Civil Engineer - or working towards becoming Chartered within next 1-2 
years 
•  Significant knowledge of geotechnical design and analysis 
•  Logical methodical approach supported by strong numerical and analytical ability 
•  Demonstrable experience of design stages within a project life cycle 
•  Good communications skills supported by an excellent command of the English 
language 
•  Accountability for quality of own work to time and budget and those of team members 
as applicable 
•  Ability to communicate effectively with site investigation contractors, main works 
contractors and/or external agencies 
•  Flexibility, including overseas travel opportunities 
•  Typically around 3 or more years’ experience in geotechnical design for highway and 
railway projects, including earthworks and foundations and large site investigations. 
Desirable skills and knowledge: 
•  Understanding of how to produce detailed CAD drawings 
•  Multi-lingual is desirable (European language is particularly so) 
•  Experience delivering complex bespoke projects 
•  Track record of working directly with clients 
Qualifications: 
•  Civil Engineering Degree (E.g. MEng Civil Engineering or BSc Civil Engineering), ideally 
with Geotechnical specialism 
•  Chartered (or significant progression) with ICE or equivalent.
