Senior Geo-environmental Engineer - Coventry


Main Function


A Senior Consultant Geo-environmental Engineer is responsible for undertaking project investigations with both a geotechnical and an environmental content as directed by the Project Manager – seeing the Project through from commencement to completion.  All Project work must be carried out with due diligence, adhered to by procedures & completed within the given cost budgets and time scales agreed.  Good communication is required to inform/liaise with the client periodically with updates & any issues raised.  It is expected that Senior grade staff should have keener project finance awareness, be client facing, self-motivated, exhibit a proactive approach, and work well within a team environment. 


Qualifications & Experience


Typically requires a second degree in a relevant discipline and be working towards Chartered status. Typically requires at least three-five years specific relevant experience.




Would typically have membership of the Geological Society of London or be working towards corporate membership of another appropriate professional institution (eg ICE, IMMM).


Principal Skills Required: 

  • Understood and have read safety control measures
  • Preparation of project safety risk assessment
  • Good knowledge of the principal soil and rock strata encountered in the UK & Ireland
  • Be able to log samples using the descriptions contained within Eurocodes 7.
  • Be familiar with and able to interpret geological maps
  • Be familiar with and able to interpret published geological data
  • Be familiar with and able to interpret historical maps and other sources of historical information
  • Be familiar with and able to interpret hydrogeological / hydrological maps
  • A thorough understanding of water, ground and soil gas monitoring techniques
  • A thorough understanding of waste management and contaminated land regulatory and legislative framework
  • A thorough knowledge of the relevant guidelines and codes of practice for the investigation and assessment of contaminated land
  • A sound ability to produce conceptual models demonstrating contaminant linkages
  • An ability to use the conceptual model to design and justify the nature and scope of site investigation works.
  • Ability to update a conceptual model using site investigation data
  • An understanding and practical use of generic assessment criteria for human health, groundwater and surface water for all media (soil, groundwater, surface water, ground gas and soil gas)
  • A sound understanding of generic quantitative risk assessment (GQRA) techniques including statistical evaluation of data
  • An understanding of options available after GQRA, including detailed quantitative risk assessment models and remediation options, eg design of cover systems
  • An understanding of the purpose of basic geotechnical tests and be able to schedule them appropriately would be advantageous
  • A good understanding of different foundation options available for structures would be advantageous
  • Good oral and written skills
  • Competence in the use of computer software packages required for project work (Word, Excel, Access, Holebase, Oasys and appropriate data handling packages, including gINT and CLT).
  • Competence in the use of Focal Point.
  • Good practical skills
  • Good time management skills
  • Good people management skills
  • Good interpersonal and presentation skills
  • An understanding of project finances and project financial control.

Line Manager Responsibility


Senior Consultant grade staff will have overall report responsibility to the Team Leader (or nominated deputy) and will also be expected to manage projects and take responsibility for managing project staff, as well as to take instructions from Project Managers for specific larger project-related work and to take appropriate guidance from staff of grades more senior than Senior Consultant.
