Senior Land Quality (Contaminated Land) Consultant

Our client is currently have an opportunity for a Senior Geo-environmental consultant to join our established Bradford on Avon office and play a key role in the growth and development of our team and Geo-environmental business within the region.This position presents an outstanding opportunity to join a team of contaminated land specialists, geotechnical engineers, risk assessors and hydrogeologists within a truly multinational consultancy and offers significant potential for career development and enhancement based on performance. Main Duties:

We would expect candidates to have demonstrable previous experience working for an engineering or environmental consultancy and have worked on a range of projects in the residential, commercial and industrial business sectors. Experience of retail petroleum and defence sites would be an advantage. The successful candidate will be required to prepare, organise and undertake a range of Phase 1 and 2 Geo-environmental assessments and site investigations; along with all associated factual and interpretative report writing and preparation. Experience of training/mentoring junior site staff, as well as client management and business development are desirable.

Whilst based in Bradford on Avon, projects may be located throughout the UK and may therefore involve travel to project sites away from home for periods lasting from 1 day to a week or more. A full, clean driving licence is therefore a pre-requisite for the post. There may also be the opportunity to work overseas.

It is anticipated applicants would have a good knowledge of

  • Organising site investigation/laboratory testing services in advance of field works;
  • Developing health and safety plans to cover identified work tasks;
  • Managing field work/laboratory programmes involving numerous sites;
  • Technical requirements of soil and rock description to BS 5930 and CIRIA C574;
  • Communicating back to colleagues regarding progress and interim technical summaries;
  • Geotechnical issues affecting foundation design and an ability to identify geotechnical risks and modify investigation strategies accordingly;
  • Ability to spot indicators of contamination based on field observations by others;
  • Ability to prepare technical reports, including data interpretation;
  • Managing and validating remediation projects.

Person Specification

Technical Skills, Abilities, Experience:


  • demonstrable experience in a consultancy environment including management of site investigations, project management, report writing and proposal writing;
  • the candidate will be expected to demonstrate experience of project management of site investigation or remediation schemes. Commercial awareness will also be desirable in budget management and negotiating with contractors;
  • organising/managing field work;
  • proven report writing skills;
  • data analysis and interpretation;
  • project management;
  • proposal writing.


  • training/mentoring junior field staff.

Education, Qualifications, Memberships:


  • Relevant first degree (Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering or similar)


  • Associated Masters degree (Engineering Geology, Contaminated Land or similar)
  • Working to achieving chartered status (CEng, CGeol or CIWEM)

  • An ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients and contractors. Ability to work in a team and self motivated. Reliable, conscientious and committed.


Additional Requirements:


  • IT literacy and proficiency in MS office applications
  • Full driving licence
  • Ability to obtain UK government security clearance – the candidate will be required to obtain UK government security clearance for certain projects. The ability to obtain this will be an essential element of the position offered
