Our client is looking to recruit an Assistant Geotechnical / Environmental Engineer / Engineering Geologist to work within their busy Civil Engineering department based at the office in Bristol.  The ideal candidate will have a background in delivering desk study reports, specifying ground investigations, preparing geotechnical interpretative/design reports. Knowledge and/or experience of earthworks, pile design, seepage analysis, ground improvement, materials management and specifications would be advantageous.

 

The Post:

This exciting opportunity will involve working with a friendly Team of specialist Design Engineers to complete varied scale geotechnical and geo-environmental ground investigations, and geotechnical design for projects for Private Sector Clients including land developers, housing builders and local authorities. This is an excellent opportunity for the right individual to help develop a strategically important area and the successful person will be key in building the business.

We typically deliver a wide range of project-types throughout the UK and for a wide range of development types including highway, power and buildings projects. Currently we are delivering a large number of desk studies, ground investigations, technical reports and geotechnical analysis and design.

Ideally applicants should have a suitable geotechnical or engineering geology degree which is accredited by the ICE or The Geological Society, and a related masters degree or be working towards such a qualification. However, consideration would also be given to suitable candidates with relevant experience.  our client prefers candidates with a strong background in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering, with an understanding of the technical aspects of the industry and proficient report writing skills. The candidate should have strong organisational and communication skills, be numerate, and take a practical approach to problem solving. Chartered status or working towards Chartered status would be an advantage.  A driving licence will be required as occasional site visits will be necessary to monitor ground investigations, earthworks and to validate foundation construction.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting with planning and design of geotechnical and geo-environmental ground investigations
  • Assisting with preparation of technical specifications
  • Undertaking geotechnical calculation and design work
  • Monitoring of ground investigations and construction work
  • Assisting with the preparation of technical notes and geotechnical reports
  • Managing of multiple projects
  • Delivering own projects whilst assisting others members of the team
  • Sharing knowledge across the organisation
  • Attend recommended training courses to assist with personal development as required by the company.
  • Comply with company Health and Safety standards at all times
  • Other duties and responsibilities commensurate with the position.

 

Person Specification:

Essential Desirable
Qualifications
BSc/BEng in Geotechnical Engineering / Engineering Geology X
MSc/MEng in Geotechnical / Geotechnical Engineering, or working towards this qualification X
‘A’ Level Maths, English and/or Science X
5 GCSE Grade C or above including Maths, English and Science X
Skills/Knowledge
Awareness  of commonly used forms of contract (NEC, ICE) X
Problem solving & analysis skills, including foundation appraisals/design, slope stability, settlement analysis. X
Experience in carrying out site visits and surveys, earthwork/foundation inspections and monitoring/supervision of sub-contractors. X
Geo-environmental investigations and chemical data assessment X
Awareness or experience of AGS data and software such as Holebase X
Chartered Engineer or Geologist (or working towards) X
Driving Licence X
Qualities
Excellent communicator, both written and oral, with good report writing skills. X

Terms & Conditions:

  • The salary will be £23,000 – £27,000 per annum (dependent on experience)
  • 23 days holiday, rising by one day per year to a maximum of 28 days
  • 5 hours per week – Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm
  • Company work place pension scheme with employer contribution of 4.5%
