We currently have an exciting opportunity for you to join a professional geo-environmental team in Southampton. You will get involved with a wide variety of geo-environmental and geotechnical projects including investigations in relation to commercial and residential development, energy infrastructure, logistics and healthcare for sites across the south coast.

What you can expect in this position
As a Principal Consultant you will be expected to support in the delivery of geo-environmental and geotechnical projects and will therefore be able to demonstrate strong technical, commercial and project management capabilities. It is expected that employees working at this grade will have a keen project finance awareness, be client facing, self-motivated, exhibit a proactive approach, and work well within a team environment.
What you’ll be doing:
- Supporting junior staff undertaking geo-environmental projects through preliminary risk assessment (PRA) and site investigation phases, including the production of high-quality interpretive reports
- Design of site investigation works and projects in the above sectors
- Technical review of geo-environmental Phase 1 & 2 reports and associated documents
- Mentoring and training junior staff
- Project lead for larger complex sites providing geo-environmental technical and project management support to junior staff. This will include a range of sites from simple site investigations through to large complex multi-disciplinary brownfield strategic development on former industrial installations
- Manage projects to meet both commercial and technical requirements and working with technical and projects leads to deliver appropriate solutions
- Effectively communicating with clients and colleagues to build strong working relationships with the aim of meeting and exceeding client expectations, and contributing to a strong team ethic
- Adhering to health, safety and environment procedures in accordance with company standards and contribute to sustainability goals
- Supporting business development through managing the preparation of tenders and networking
- Geotechnical/earthworks knowledge would be beneficial to provide advice, review documents and mentor existing staff
What we’re looking for:
- Practical experience in designing, supervising and managing ground investigations for geo-environmental assessments on wide range of sites
- Experienced project manager in an environmental/ engineering consultancy environment
- Geo-environmental experience on a wide range of projects from small to large scale. Some experience in larger brownfield regeneration sites would be preferable
- Geotechnical and earthworks experience preferable
- Ability to technical and commercially review geo-environmental reports produced by junior members of the team
- Proven experience of preparing tenders and fee proposals
- Comfortable with business development and approaching new people whether it be at an organised event or on a one-on-one basis
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing
- Knowledge of contaminated land and planning legislation in the UK
- Ability to multi-task, plan and prioritise workload
- Client-driven with the ability to motivate and engage with immediate colleagues and those across the wider RSK business
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Computer literate and skilled with Microsoft Office applications, in particular Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience of use of Microsoft Project also valuable.
- Full UK driving licence
Qualifications/Certification
- BSc degree level qualified in Geology, Chemistry, Civil Engineering or a related subject
- MSc in Land contamination/ hydrogeology or Engineering Geology/Geotechnical Engineering or Contaminated Land preferable but not essential
- Chartered Geologist, Scientist or Engineer with a relevant professional body or working towards Chartered status with a relevant institution
- Typically requires at least 10+ years specific relevant experience
